Paula Kent was an inspiring actress in the 1950’s, most known for her role in the show 77 Sunset Strip. Paula dealt with many severe allergic reactions throughout her acting career due to the petroleum in hair- and skin-care products. She mentioned this frustration to her hairstylist Jheri Redding, whom was also an amateur chemist on the side, and together they decided to change
the way of hair products. They came up with the idea of creating pH-balanced shampoos that would match that of the mild acidity of human hair and skin, by adding protein, vitamins and minerals to hair-care products.
The first product they developed was Aminopon shampoo, and the initial product was mixed in Paula’s bath tub, stirred with a canoe paddle. By 1960 Redken Laboratories had altered hair-care products forever. In only six years, Paula Kent, went on to make Redken the largest maker of hair- and skin- care products sold exclusively through beauty supply companies. At that time, Redken’s distribution was in 35 countries. In 1993, Paula sold the company to L’Oréal, who still owns Redken today. Redken continues to honour the research and development that has made the brand exclusive.
Today consumers can expect Redken’s commitment to the ever changing world of hair care. It will find the best solutions, to suit all individual hair-care needs.
