Safe Ear Piercing

Thinking of getting your ears pierced, or getting your kid’s ears pierced? Well be sure to read on before you just run to the nearest jewelry store or salon! Here are a few things to look for when searching for a safe piercer.

– Avoid spring-loaded guns. You may not be able to tell by looking at it, so be sure you ask questions. Spring-loaded guns can damage the tissue and cause keloid scarring. Hand-pressured guns are much gentler and the pressure can be controlled.

– If the piercer is using a needle it should be a new needle that they open in front of you, and throw in the hazardous waste when they are finished. Needles should never be reused. Most ear piercings use the actual jewelry to create the piercing.

– To ensure there is NO question regarding the sterilization of the earrings it is best to look for jewelry that is fully encapsulated in a pre-sterilized cartridge. This ensures there is no cross contamination that could lead to an infection.

– Make sure the piercer cleans the work area thoroughly prior to your appointment and that he/she is wearing gloves throughout the procedure.

– The piercer should make a marking on the ear and double-check the placement with you before going forward with the piercing.

– Don’t be afraid to ask to see the piercer’s certification.

– Your piercer should provide you with a cleansing solution specific to piercings and appropriate for daily use on the skin, (it should not irritate or dry out the skin).
